Views on the value of vitamin and mineral supplements vary wildly, particularly between orthodox medical doctors and supplement-minded practitioners. The general orthodox view is that so long long as you eat a healthy, balanced diet, you don't need anything extra. If you are highly stressed you can safely take daily an extra l000mg of Vitamin C (with bioflavonoids) and 25mg B6 (which helps the body make use of tryptophan); this should be accompanied by a B-complex tablet. If you smoke, you need extra amounts of both B and C since nicotine leaches these vitamins, as well as some minerals, from the system.
The mineral calcium is widely recommended for nerves and anxiety; a naturopath recommends taking 200mg daily in the form of Dolomite tablets, which contain natural calcium combined with magnesium, another stress reducer which also helps the body to absorb the calcium. Zinc can also be useful, particularly if you are depressed; since this comes in many varieties, consult your health food shop owner or natural health practitioner before buying.
