TOWARDS GOOD SLEEP: A WORD ABOUT ALCOHOL
It's true that a small amount of alcohol is a relaxant, and can blur the edges of anxiety. But there are both disadvantages and risks in the alcoholic night-cap. Alcohol is a drug: it's possible for one glass to turn into two, or more . . . and before you know it you have developed a dependency. And even if it helps you to get off to sleep initially, alcohol can actually cause insomnia. To digest it, your liver and kidneys have to work extra hard, and your body has to provide extra adrenalin — which is, of course, a stimulant. It has been found that after alcohol intake, sleep is more disturbed with more awakenings; alcohol also reduces REM sleep.
Drinking large amounts of alcohol regularly can lead to alcohol addiction — alcoholism, in other words — which affects your body, your work, and your relationships, and your sleep.
So, ideally, stick to no more than a glass or two of wine, two or three days a week; you'll feel better for it all round. If you feel deprived on non-alcohol days, boost your morale by telling yourself you' re giving your body — especially your hard-working liver — a nice rest!
If you find it really difficult to have a non-alcohol day, it could be that you have a real problem. Alcohol addiction is something that people find it very hard to admit to; as an AA member once said to me, 'It's the one disease that tells you you haven't got it!' But if you really want to lead a more balanced life, and suspect you may be addicted, it is vital to acknowledge the fact and deal with it. It is not something to be ashamed of. Drinking is a socially acceptable way of coping with stress; unfortunately it can create further stress. There are healthier options.
You will find a local branch of Alcoholics Anonymous in your phone book; don't be embarrassed to get in touch with them for a talk. They are nice, helpful people, who recognize alcoholism as a disease rather than a character defect. There are also organizations which use counselling and group therapy to help people cut down on their alcohol intake without giving up altogether. Consult your doctor, or contact your local Citizens Advice Bureau for details of local organizations who can help.
