EXERCISE FOR YOUR HEALTH: MEASURING PULSE RATE
Everyone should know how to measure the rate of the pulse. The rate is much faster in children than in adults. It varies from just over 100 beats a minute for a three-year-old to eighty-one for a boy of twelve; sixty-eight or seventy for a youth of eighteen, and sixty-eight for a man of sixty. The rate for women is five to nine beats higher in each age group.
Here is how the pulse gauge works in relation to exercise. Count your pulse beat after you have been sitting for a while and have not had any exercise. Then stand up and simulate running for a few minutes. Running of this type for five minutes will speed the heart and pulse more than the same exercise for three minutes. The longer the exercise, the longer time required for the rate to return to normal.
Among a group of boys who ran the 100-yard dash there was an average increase of forty-five beats per minute in the pulse at the end of the race. The pulse of a sprinter who had run 400 yards was still sixteen beats above normal after he had rested one hour and twenty minutes.
