TOWARDS GOOD SLEEP: HERBAL DRINKS

Herb teas are becoming increasingly popular as replacements for caffeine-containing drinks. There is a good variety of herbal tea-bags in the shops, some of them specially blended to help you relax or sleep. They are quite expensive; it's cheaper to buy loose herbs from a herbalist or health food shop and experiment with single herbs or mixtures. Herbs can lose their efficacy over time, so buy them in small quantities, keep them in an air-tight jar, and use them promptly.

Herbal infusions

Herbal infusions are slightly stronger than teas, and can be taken medicinally three times a day. You can make up an infusion of one or more herbs, using 1-2 heaped teaspoonfuls of dried leaves or flowers to a cup of water. Use a herbal infuser or small teapot, and pour the water onto the herbs when just on the boil. Leave to stand, covered, for at least 5-10 minutes before drinking, up to 20 minutes if you are taking them medicinally.

Children and babies will respond to smaller doses; where an adult takes a cupful, a 10-year-old can have a small glass, a toddler a tablespoon and a baby small, occasional sips.

Camomile is one of the best-known herbs for calming the nerves, and for settling the digestion. It is said to have cumulative effects, becoming more effective over a period of time. However, some people find the flavour rather bland, and it has the disadvantage of being mildly diuretic.

Lime-flower (linden) makes a very effective and pleasant flavoured night-cap and is good for headaches, nervous tension and restlessness. The herbalist Michael McIntyre, co-author of The Complete New Herbal* told me that when he lived in France hyperactive children would be taken out to have tea under the lime trees in summer, because of their calming effect. And it didn't only calm children. 'The bees were narcotized,' he said. 'You'd see them lying there glugging gently because they'd had a bit too much lime flower while taking the nectar!' (A nice image to go to bed with!)

Scullcap is a tonic as well as a sedative, high in magnesium and calcium, which help to strengthen the nervous system. It is not always easy to obtain, and what is often sold as scullcap is another herb called teucrium (wood sage). So get the genuine article, Scutellaria laterifolia, from a reputable herbalist.

Passiflora (passion flower) is another good soporific, a constituent of many herbal sleeping pills.

Valerian root is well-known as a sedative. It tastes like old socks (and smells worse) but a proportion of it can be mixed with more pleasant-flavoured herbs. Valerian has a more 'druggy' effect than most herbs, and some people find it gives them headaches if drunk in large quantities; so (unless prescribed by a herbalist) don't take it consecutively for more than a week or two.

Hawthorn flowers are good for people who don't sleep because they have heart palpitations.

Mint is good for soothing the digestion.

Lemon Balm and vervain are good for depression.
